PCAP Addresses Child Abuse and Neglect

Did you know that at the end of 2018, there were over 15,000 children in foster care in our state?

Our great State of Georgia is in a child abuse and neglect crises.
These children have a higher-than-average chance of developing behavioral problems and learning disabilities requiring special education, of dropping out of high school, growing up to commit violent crimes, and being sexually exploited and trafficked. Statistics support that roughly 60% of children who are sexually exploited through human trafficking have come out of the child welfare system.

We are a generous community, but we must do more to keep our families intact and our children safe. What affects our families and children affects the future of our county.

Prevent Child Abuse Pickens (PCAP) chooses to see it, and to do something about it.
The goal of Prevent Child Abuse Pickens is simple: to stop child abuse and neglect before it starts. For 26 years, PCAP has been reaching families with the support they need to thrive. This non-profit organization has been a lighthouse to parents who simply need extra support and education, and to families who may be at risk of DFACS intervention. PCAP has helped Pickens county families with parenting skills and by teaching parents how to prepare their newborn through 5-year-old for success in school and life.

While much has been accomplished, more must be done. PCAP is at an exciting turning point and is being presented with challenging new opportunities. As we move into the new year, Prevent Child Abuse Pickens will begin offering specialized parenting programs to parents currently involved in the court system. The new programs will be specialized to address the unique circumstances of these at-risk families, including addiction and domestic violence. In addition, PCAP will be offering specialized support as children are reunited with their parents within the home upon completion of the court mandated programs.

PCAP is committed to doing everything possible to keep families intact whenever possible, but it truly does take a village.
There are many ways to help Prevent Child Abuse Pickens, a local non-profit which depends on donations, sponsorship, and grants for programming and staff funding. Consider becoming a “Friend of PCAP” monthly giver – even the smallest gift can go a long way. Your Pickens County business can help by becoming a full-time corporate sponsor. Pickens County citizens are welcome to volunteer their time and talents as a PCAP board member. Lastly, PCAP hosts several fundraisers throughout the year, including the beautiful Long Table on Main each September. We invite you to attend the organization’s fundraisers held here in Jasper, Georgia, or to volunteer to help with planning.

Our families need you. Please visit pcapickens.org for more information, or call 706-253-6488. Please consider what you can do to help support the families of our Pickens county community. Remember, what affects the health and well-being of our families and children, affects the health and well-being of our county.
